I think this is a really interesting question. On one level the treatment is clearly behavioural as it is the child’s speaking behaviour that parents are shown how to respond to. However, the treatment needs to be done in a sensitive way and driven by a desire to achieve more enjoyable communication. Children who stutter also usually want to enjoy talking and I view the treatment as collaborative in the social sense and in the sense of collaborative learning. Children, parents and the therapists are all learning together about how best to use this relatively simple concept of helpful feedback. With each new child all three (therapist, parent, child) have to collaborate to find the best ways of doing the program to establish what works best for individual cases while retaining the integrity of the treatment. This is important for successful outcomes and to ensure we are using the evidence based treatment.
