Hi Alan, You are not the first to call me Rachel! Over here in the UK Rosemarie and Rachel were popular names at around the same time but also there was a famous woman cricketer, Rachel Hayhoe-Flint and I wonder if sometimes the association just gets triggered and out pops Rachel! Your childhood sounds wonderful and raises a thorny question: How can we help children grow up resilient so that they can take the rough along with the smooth? Certainly the childhood you describe seems to have worked well for you but some children seem to start off robust and resilient- and good at sports- and then their experiences further support this way of interacting with life- a sort of positive circle. When parents are less confident or have their own troubles they may not be able to provide an idyllic childhood. Sometimes what works well for one child just doesn’t seem to help another sibling. But I like your message Alan and whatever treatment we offer children who stammer we want them to feel good about themselves and secure in the love of their families.
