Hello Kala, The LP is a behavior modification therapy and we are trying to reduce the stuttering behaviour BUT more importantly we are trying to increase the child’s stutter-free behaviour and we do this by acknowledgement and praise. Parents are shown how to increase stutter-free speaking and how to reinforce this also, and much less frequently, they ask the child to self-correct their stuttering. I think there are different ways to understand what happens in the LP and I do not take a strictly behavioural view of it. By letting a child know when they are speaking without stuttering (not all the time but when appropriate for their stage in treatment) we are drawing their attention to the speech pattern we would like them to use. When a child is encouraged to self-correct we are giving them a little space in the conversation to sort out their speaking and so they maybe learn to manage those moments of fluency breakdown more successfully. By ‘successful’ I mean without the struggle and tension that is part of their stuttering. I hope that answers your question. An example of an indirect treatment is the Demands Capacities Model and there are plenty of resources based on this approach that I’m sure you will be able to find. Best wishes
