Hi Lindsay, Sorry I’ve been slow to answer your questions. The LP is a treatment that requires the clinician to teach parents ways of responding to their child’s speaking so that their stutter free speaking increases and their stuttering reduces. They also learn how to structure conversations (for a short while each day) so that the child can experience speaking with very little stuttering. This is necessary in the early stages of treatment to ensure that the child gets plenty of encouragement for their stutter free speech. During these structured conversations the child will only stutter now and again and so they can be asked if they would like to smooth the bumpy words. Gradually, as the child becomes more fluent in their everyday talking so parents begin to provide feedback now and again throughout the day. It sounds a simple treatment and in some ways it is but it does need to be adapted to suit each individual parent/child. It is important that children enjoy the treatment and do not feel criticized by the parents comments on their speech. Two day training courses are run for practicing speech language pathologists where they learn how to do the treatment safely. The therapist demonstrates the treatment at all stages and parents practice in the clinic before trying things at home. You can get more information about the treatment from the Australian Stuttering Research Centre website. We would never recommend that parents try the treatment without the guidance of a trained SLP. Best wishes
