Hello Phil, Since first spending two weeks in Australia learning how to use the LP I have used it more and more as it has worked so well for so many children and their parents. So when I assess that a child is at risk for persistent stuttering then my first choice of treatment is the LP. However, I respect parents’ wishes and am sensitive to the pressures and difficulties they are experiencing and just now and again it is not a feasible treatment option. The next bit of your question is much harder to answer because I don’t know what you mean by ‘suitable home environment’. We aim for children to be able to speak without stuttering in their own home whatever that is like (I don’t think I need to go into why I would not use the LP in an abusive environment or when parents or child are seriously damaged). ‘Yes’ is the simple answer to your final question but our job is to help parents find a level of helping that is right for their child. As with any treatment the child’s welfare is paramount and we have a duty to guide parents – that’s one of the reasons why we need to be properly trained as SLPs and in the treatments we use. Good luck!
