Elizabeth, You asked "Is there a specific category or name of this type of stuttering?" I think you have misunderstood my paper a bit. This was not a person who stutters that avoided the /r/ sound. It was a person who had a long-standing articulation problem on that one sound so decided he wasn't going to say it anymore. This is an example of "avoidance behavior" which is also the term used when talking about anything we avoid - in stuttering we might see avoidance behavior where a person avoids certain words or sounds, certain speaking situations, etc. But we all have "avoidance behaviors." I've been avoiding making a dentist appointment for several weeks for example. You also mentioned that you appreciated my "strategies." Any strategies I've talked about in this paper is not something I would use in working with a person who stutters. It is something I would use to help students like you, family members, teachers, and friends of people who stutter to get a glimpse of what avoidance behavior might be like for a person who stutters. Judy
