Yes, I think you are right that "avoidance behaviors" in speaking in certain situations is not just something we see in people who stutter and may need to be addressed in other clients as well. Your question about if avoidance behavior occurs more often in teens than in adults is an interesting one. Teens deal a lot with peer pressure which could make them more likely to avoid, and older adults have sometimes made a conscious decision not to avoid anymore (read Alan Badmington's poem). But I'm not sure if one can really make a generalization about what age group is more prone to avoidance behaviors. The longer one practices avoidance, the "better" one might become at it and the stronger the habit might become. Some adults are so good at it that other people do not even know they stutter! Judy
