Hannah, thank you for your article, it really struck a chord with me. I have been covert since I was very young and use lots of tricks and avoidances. Although less so since I did Speech therapy for the first time 5 years ago and I am learning to let go of my crutches slowly. However, it is frustrating for me when I tell someone I stutter because I have always had a high level of natural fluency in addition to my many tricks and, David, most people genuinely did not know I stuttered because I could 'make' myself fluent by adopting a persona of a confident, successful and articulate person. However, I am sure other stutterers and particularly coverts could see right through me. But what made me decide I didn't want to be covert anymore was because I wanted to acknowledge the impact my stammer and its covert nature had on my life. My journey started in April 2005 when I decided to start speech therapy and will probably last for the rest of my life. Veronica
