Hannah, thank you for your article. You wrote, “Foremost, I am committed to telling the truth about stuttering.” I love this. As a former covert stutterer (I grew up so covert that most people did not know that I stuttered), I think it is so important that we just tell our stories. Telling the truth about my covert stuttering meant facing years of shame and fears about what would happen if I allowed myself to stutter noticeably. Telling the truth about my covert stuttering meant having to own up to the fact the I felt I was living a lie, that my existence felt like just a mess of bizarre preparations for the possibility of stuttering and feeling that others would not accept me. After many years of hiding my stuttering, I found that telling the truth about who I was helped release me from years of pain. Thank you for sharing.
