Well, my family now knows that stuttering impacted my life greatly but they don't really want to think about it too much. I've only had direct conversations about stuttering with my mother and one sister and the latter was not very supportive. My mother has had to look back at a lot to realize that my life was not what she thought it was. I also have not resolved all of my own feelings about my family's response to it so I add some baggage to any attempted conversation. I believe my stuttering was not the only elephant shoved under the rug in our family so it's a general pattern of relating that doesn't help. Whenever SLP students ask me what I want them to know about stuttering, I tell them that whole families have to be educated about what stuttering is and the topic needs to be out in the open, comfortable and safe in the family.
