Jayme, the steps have to be slow, small. A covert stutterer usually does not want to expose it all at once to everyone. It starts with acceptance which is huge. The person may want to start by placing books/brochures in their personal environment to discreetly reveal what is currently of interest to them. Then they can start choosing one person at a time to start exposing their stuttering to. First it might be someone unimportant to them, someone out in public. Then they might start exposing it to more important people in their lives. But the client gets to decide, gets to determine their goals. I would be cautious of a covert person wanting to "exchange" covertness for fluency too quickly. In other words, I'm saying they need to get used to stuttering openly to learn that it is truly okay. For a covert stutterer, working towards fluency too quickly might just be another way of avoiding. Hannah
