Erin, most definitely I was emotionally and mentally affected by the misconceptions about stuttering as are all people who stutter. That is why we take on the responsibility of helping to educate others about stuttering and why there are organizations such as the NSA, SFA, Friends who's mission it is to support, advocate, and educate on behalf of PWS. All of these organizations and SLP's who specialize in stuttering know how important it is to educate whole families when young people come to them for help. They educate them about what stuttering actually is and they teach them such things as how to listen to their child who stutters, how to model good speech patterns around their child. It's a little different when you are an adult. Attempts to educate family members when you are an adult who stutters usually is done by the PWS and that process varies for each person (sometimes it doesn't really happen). There may be some SLP's who are helping adults and get involved with the family but I did not ask my SLP to do that. It's trickier later in life because much more has transpired by then between the PWS and their families. I'm speaking of their families of origin. I've seen wonderful transformation for adults who stutter and their own families as they educate their spouses and even their children. Hannah
