Hi Nikki, Thanks for your comments and questions. I do think that reading fiction books about characters who stutter could be a beneficial activity for parents and children to do together at home. It would be a nice starting point for opening a discussion about stuttering and feelings about stuttering. As we mentioned in the article, children often find it easier to discuss personal challenges in the context of a character or situation that is removed from themselves. In addition, I think these types of books would be helpful in giving parents an insight into what their children may be experiencing. In my experience, parents are typically very eager and willing to implement strategies at home. I think that if we’re suggesting they use these books in the home setting, however, we’d want to stay involved as a “specialist” to guide the book selection process and provide suggestions for guiding the discussion.
