The goal of using this approach as part of a treatment program would be to confront and/or change attitudes and emotions related to stuttering, not necessarily to directly alter or decrease disfluencies. However, with a child who has developed fear and avoidance of speech, these books and ensuing discussions would hopefully help with the beginning stages of stuttering modification—specifically Van Riper’s stages of Identification and Desensitization.
