Once the identity of the stutterer is forming or formed we need CBT to complement speech targets. We want to reframe these thoughts (i.e., "I'm weird because I stutter) asap. These cognitive distortions (see Burns reference) lead to avoidance and fear. Last week I met a 2nd grader who had cyclical stuttering for three years. Since school started he had two kids ask "why do you keep doing that?!" He told me "I am afraid they won't want to be my friend if I keep stuttering." Sigh..... I am doing CBT and teaching fluency shaping and stuttering modification. I am positive about him.
