An example of CBT's power and necessity is a 3rd grader who had a mild, intermittent stutter that blows up following negative reactions from his environment. All of sudden this 'meaningless' intermittent speech impediment has MEANING- a stigma. As his anticipatory anxiety grows he may want to avoid talking. High anxiety increases symptoms and makes it harder to modify the stutters in the mouth. That child needs help to reframe the meaning of his stutter (personalization) and speech targets.
