Good and tough question. Work by Libby Oyler and some others suggest pws are more sensitive than others. We are delving into temperament. Ironically I have seen siblings who stutter react in a dramatically different way to stuttering: one began avoiding and emoting and the other just pushed and blocked (both age 4). A pws support group will often have some pws who appear mild on the surface but really loathe stuttering and some more overt but appear more adjusted. A perfectionist personality, for example, can really exacerbate stuttering. These are really good research ideas for pre-k: which kids really need early intervention because they display a temperament that places them at risk for rapid progression in grades K-5. Today I spoke to 4 mom's of pre-k kids. Two have verbalized concern and two are using character voices, copious interjections, and movement of extremities. Those two are 1) aware, 2) trying to compensate and prevent speech problems. I feel they both need help now.
