Jim, your comment "the vast majority of people who stutter don't talk about it" is an interesting statement. And I would offer that the vast majority of people who don't stutter, don't recognize many who stutter as being stutterers. So unless those who don't stutter start to recognize stuttering and/or those who stutter start to talk about it, nothing is going to change very quickly. There are many ways that those interested in stuttering are educating about stuttering. The NSA, SF, BSA, ELSA, IFA, ISA, ISAD, the SHP, other support organizations around the world, etc. have been working to do that for several years now. But the individuals who talk about stuttering one on one are also a very important part of that network. Years ago, an annual ISAD event (on October 22) was that when noon came, wherever you were in the world, PWS, students in speech therapy programs, parents of children who stutter, clinicians and other professionals, turn to the person next to them and start a conversation about stuttering. My students at MSU, Mankato joined in that effort and the strangest occurrence was when a student standing in line at a fast foods restaurant turned to stranger next to her in line and they both started to talk about stuttering at the same time. Both were taking the ISAD challenge. . . . Maybe that should become an annual event. . . .
