Awareness is low because most people who stutter are embarrassed and ashamed of their stuttering and do not talk about it. So when stuttering is portrayed inaccurately in film and on TV, few people are willing to go public and complain about it. When most groups feel slighted by the media -- people with disabilities, teachers, gun owners -- editors and producers receive bushels of angry letters. When the National Stuttering Association protests an inaccurate portrayal of stuttering, we are usually alone. Interestingly, SLPs are as reticent about complaining as PWS.
