It's a combination of reporters' lack of knowledge and societal stereotypes. However, media outlets can survive only by using their shrinking resources to appeal to what readers and viewers are already interested in. If nobody talks about stuttering, and nobody steps forward to complain about inaccurate or unfair treatment, editors will interpret that as lack of audience interest. We -- people who stutter and SLPs -- need to take the initiative in starting the conversation.
