Hi Lori, I really enjoyed reading your article and suggestions for functional communication tools for fluency therapy. I am currently in graduate school and our program emphasizes the importance on how authentic and functional communication situations are essential for appropriate therapy and carry over. I find it is often difficult for an individual to generalize their strategies if their therapy doesn’t provide functional communication situations for them to occur. I find it really interesting how the use of practice groups with individuals who stutter promotes carry over. Stuttering is multi-factorial and I completely agree with your strategies focusing on the individual’s emotions and fears. Currently my offsite is a high school and there is only one individual who stutters at this location and he receives group therapy with other language students. I find in the school settings time is short with these students and often they are in group settings with other speech or language disorder individuals. I was wondering how you would provide fluency therapy with your approach to an individual in a group setting with other language disorders?
