Hello Grant, I had to read an Aussie contribution first! This is a thought provoking piece that raises several questions for me which I hope fall within the scope of your doctoral research. You say that very few Australian Higher Education students who stutter register with university disability liaison officers (UDLOs) for the purpose of seeking assistance during their studies. What specific backing have these few students received from university disability liaison officers, and have they found it beneficial or not? With regard to: “One problem is that because students who stutter are not registering with university-based disability service units then disability officers are not exposed informatively to the plight and problems that these students in general may encounter.” Is this something you explored with (a) some of the few students who stutter who have accessed UDLOs’ help; and (b) university disability liaison officers who have set out to help students who stutter? Do you see a role for speech-language pathologists in educating students (as to their rights, etc) and educating UDLOs about aspects of stuttering that affect individual students or students who stutter in general – or is this a matter between PWS who are students on the one hand, and UDLOs on the other? Best wishes, Caroline Caroline Bowen PhD CPSP Speech Language Pathologist 9 Hillcrest Road Wentworth Falls NSW 2782 Australia
