This was a very interesting spin on the word "disabled"! It seems likely that most people that stutter do not want such an emotionally loaded term attached to their person. Especially when you look at all the people that assume this word does, in fact, mean: "illness; jobless; retarded; lacking intelligence; mute; wheelchair bound; deaf; depressed; mentally ill; uneducable; lacking limbs; friendless; a burden on society; no sex life etc. Would you apply the word "disabled" to a disfluent preschooler, whom will likely have spontaneous recovery? Or would you only attach "disabled" to people that chronically stutter and exhibit severe behaviors? Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear back from you!
