Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about the term disability and how it relates to stuttering. Like so many other things in life I believe identifying yourself as disabled is a personal choice. Because of the negative thoughts and feelings related to the term I believe it is very hard for some people to envision themselves under the category. Prior to reading this paper I would have never connected the two terms. I do realize that the term disability can refer to a person who stutters. I wonder if apply the term “disability” to individuals who stutter would decrease that individual’s self-confidence regarding their communication? Personally, I do not believe stuttering is a disability but the fear linked to the term is.
