Thanks Grant for a great article. My son has chronic fatigue syndrome CFS that is very disabling but we don't want to call it a disability. I like the ideas from narrative eg Karen Weingarten http://www.dulwichcentre.com.au/illness-narratives.html where the self concept story is a better way to make sense of things than classification schemes with labels like disability, condition, illness etc that don't help much. Ironically, narrative therapies with CFS in adolescents that involve the telling of your past self story, present self story and future self story seem to be strikingly effective. I can see that a self story by someone who stutters that mentions the D word, makes sense. And a self story by someone else who stutters not saying the D word also makes sense. What is harmful is not having, revising and reflecting on a self story.
