Hello Jennifer and thanks. I would say definitely a combination of the fear of negative listener reactions/perceptions and the negative stigmata attached to the “D” word would heavily come into play. A person who stutters may fear being perceived negatively based on possibly a single vocal interaction and being labelled by a stranger negatively to the word disability. This makes me think though. Some people who stutter spend so much time and energy into hiding their stuttering to try to appear “normal” yet by doing so they end up acting unnatural and in some cases draw even more attention and negative reactions to themselves. You have inspired me to think even more Jennifer 
