Hello, I think you should be proud of who ever you are regardless of having a disability or not. You are a unique individual with your own skills, talents and opinions. I think self pride is very important and if you do happen to believe that you have a disability why not take pride in it? It is one of those little things that make you unique. It is something that has helped to shape you into the person that you are today. I think we PWS should take be proud to accept the often misunderstood mantle of “disability” if we personally CHOOSE to accept to be annexed occasionally by the term. Why not? What do we lose by doing so? It is obvious by looking at one common definition of the word that you will not be alone in doing so. I think by being proud and accepting the term then you actually accept a level of normality and you may not view yourself as being a special case. Clearly all of society will wear this label, “disability, at some point in their lives. Why not join them? Personally I am proud of what I have achieved in my life but I do not view it with my stuttering in mind. I refuse to use it as a point of comparison or pity. I freely admit that my stuttering has had some disabling effects on my life from time to time and will continue to do so but what I have done and continue to do with my life is my choice.
