Thank you, Mr. Meredith, for your inspiring words! I enjoyed reading this very much. I found it very refreshing to hear another person confirm that disabilities are not always defined by the overt behavior, but sometimes by the covert. I understand this well because my father has Multiple Sclerosis. Most days he appears to be fine, but what most people do not realize is that walking, even on a good day, is a constant struggle for him. When thinking of stuttering as a disability, I was once again drawn back to Joseph Sheehan’s model of the Iceberg and reminded that not all disabilities are defined by what is visible on the surface level. As a future speech and language pathologist, I hope to be able to empower people who stutter to be able to proudly say, as you stated in the last sentence of your paper, “I am disabled.” Thank you.
