Jacy, HI! Congrats on choosing the field of Communication Disorders? How far along are you in your studies? Where are you going to school? Very exciting. You ask a great questions about sharing with clients and empathy. Yes being a person who stutters is a great asset for me to connect with clients and families, however you don't need to stutter to connect or have empathy. We all have feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, and anxiety. Welcome to some of the psychological elements of stuttering (for both the person who stutters and the families). As far as opening up to clients, I feel we lead by example. If we share our lives (our challenges, our struggles) with clients that provides a model to clients that they too can share thoughts and feelings. Therapy is a conversation, a dance if you will: we listen, they share, we share, they share, we listen some more, they share...Fun stuff. Thank you very much for your questions! Have a good night! Scott
