Jen, HI! Thanks you for writing, however more importantly congrats on being in this field! Welcome!!!! I just wanted to add on thing (Jaime did such a wonderful job explaining counseling, really!!!). I wanted to add, you can help clients and families become comfortable with thier sharing if you share things about you. Counseling is a conversation (a dance if you will). We are sharing not only our professional thoughts, we CAN also share parts of our struggles in life. Nothing bonds people together more than sharing similar challenges. We all know loss, we all know pain, we all know sadness and anger. We as therapist CAN share (when appropriate and not constantly) some struggles we have. This "models" the behavior we are after as well as encouraging clients to join in the conversation... Just some thoughts from contextual psychology (ACT)... Again feel free to ask Jaime or I anything you wish and stay in contact with us, we would love to hear how your career evolves! Have a great day, Scott
