Kasie, HI!!! First, thank you for choosing this field and good luck in Grad school!! Grad school is tough (as you know it, however it is a path and trip that is worth the effort in the end, you may not see it now, however you will).. Where are you at school? How exciting for you!!....Your questions are great and I thank you for them. I did receive speech therapy when I was 8 years old for about six months. What happened was I read out loud and the therapist told me to "slow down, stop and think about what I was saying, and breath." She told my parents to tell me those same things whenever I stuttered too! So after about six months I walked into the therapist's office and said "I think I'm done" and walked a back out (an 8 year old telling a therapist he quits, funny huh!). My parents didn't push the issue and that was that. Stuttering still was never talked about until I sought therapy at 18. It is important that all therapist hear these stories and understand that stuttering involves counseling parents and counseling the client. Listening to thoughts (both good and the negative ones)is a vital skill we all can have, and can help people confront thoughts that cause anxiety and lead to fears. To say stuttering is just a physical behavioral disorder is really being naive to the power of thoughts...Just some ideas of mine, that is all....Please feel free to ask more questions or contact Jaime or I with how your career goes as a speech pathologist... Congrats!!! Have a great day!Scott
