I think the best thing to do is to ask the person who is speaking how they would like for us to respond. Of course, this question should be asked only in a one-on-one situation. I have met poeple who NEVER want us to talk for them, but I have also met poeple who have said, "If you see me struggling for a long time and know what I am trying to say, please say it for me". Some people have also given me a cue that signifies when they want or need help. It is different for all, and the best way to find out is to ask. Not to mention, the self-esteem and trust that can be built by allowing people to make their own choice. Thanks for the question, John Tetnowski
