The other day I was speaking to another friend who stutters. We both described occasions in which we had perceived ourselves to be stuttering quite little but when we heard the recorded play-back of those occasions, we realized we had stuttered more than we thought. Initially we had both felt good about ourselves but upon reviewing our actual speech, we had doubts. But I said, "If we felt good about our speech, and we got our point across, isn't that good enough?" Could feeling good and getting your point across be "fluency"?! Conversely, I recently heard another recording of myself in which I thought I had been quite fluent, i.e., not much stuttering. What I was, however, was someone with a rapid rate of speech and using "um" in a very distracting way. I felt worse about that than if I had just stuttered. Hannah
