Gabby, thanks for writing. You ask, “Do you think that the term ‘fluency’ has negatively impacted treatment for stuttering?” It is not so much the specific word “fluency” that is the problem, it is that the word is often being used in ways that do not seem productive. As I have said in a previous post or two, I think that if the word “fluency” were to disappear from the stuttering and speech pathology worlds, other terms would probably emerge that would also cloud the issues and take people further away from being specific and descriptive about the issues at hand.
