Kirby, thanks for writing and sharing the challenges you are currently facing. You ask, “what do you think [of ]developing a basic glossary that provides descriptive vocabulary for speech behaviors as a tool for beginning this type of discussion in therapy …” The more I work in this field the more I am learning to allow and encourage children (and adults) to explore, define and describe their own behaviors. You write, “I have one school-based fluency client on my caseload that my supervisor and I are trying to figure out what to do with!” Thank you for sharing this and being so honest. It sounds like you may need or want to explore some materials. There are many books, articles and videos regarding treating school-age children. The Stuttering Foundation offers a set of six DVDs titled “Practical Ideas for the School Clinician - 6 DVD Series” (http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=15 and other materials such as a wonderful activity book by Chmela and Reardon (http://secure.stutteringhelp.org/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SFA&Product_Code=0005&Category_Code=S). I mention the Stuttering Foundation materials first because they are very valuable and well done while also being inexpensive. Perhaps you may want to go to the “Ask your question here” section of this conference and ask folks to recommend their favorite materials.
