Jackie, thanks for writing. You ask, “Do you think describing the ‘speech’ or ‘stuttering behavior’ to caregivers/parents of pws children will decrease their worries on having a child who stutter?” Keep in mind that in general, children who stutter begin speaking without stuttering. And then, after speaking “normally” for some time the stuttering is heard (the stuttering emerges). This is very scary for parents and parents often feel guilty, responsible, afraid, desperate, etc. So, considering the whole of the stuttering problem, I am not sure that using specific and descriptive language will immediately decrease worries. I do think though that in the long run many clients will appreciate and benefit from direct lines of communication that include specific, clear, sensitive and unambiguous language.
