I am excited to take “The Fluency Challenge”. After reading this paper I realize how vague fluency really is. Who is fluent speech? I am a first year SLP graduate student and am in my first fluency class this semester. One of the first things we talked about was that no one is truly “fluent”. People who don’t stutter do not have fluent speech; repetitions, revisions, and many more stutter like disfluencies are heard. People who stutter show more dramatic characteristics, so they are also not fluent. If a client comes into the therapy room and claims they “want to be fluent” and I answer, “in order for you to be fluent you need to…” what is the goal of therapy? In any other type of speech-language therapy one of the main techniques is having the client identify why they are coming to therapy. The same should be true for stuttering therapy. The client should be able to identify in their own words what they are trying to work on.
