Katie, thanks so much for writing. You ask, “When you do introduce the Fluency Challenge, what do you find to be the most appropriate age if a child is stuttering in preschool, or is age a factor when introducing the Fluency Challenge?” I can’t offer you an exact age. I would definitely not try and discuss terms such as “fluency” with preschoolers. To me, the Fluency Challenge is about being specific and descriptive in our language. I have had children as young as 7-8 years of age talk about “fluency”, “control”, etc. When I feel it is appropriate, I engage them in talking about these terms and what they mean when using them. You ask “Or at that age [preschool age], when the child is seemingly unaware of his stutter, is it more appropriate to introduce the Fluency Challenge to the parents?” When working with parents of preschoolers, I tend to get a lot of questions about recovery, not fluency. This makes sense considering that so many preschoolers recover.
