Samantha, thanks for writing. You wrote, “Is there currently a trend in therapy to provide more of a descriptive definition of fluency and stuttering in the writing of treatment goals?” In general, I doubt so, or maybe a better way of saying that is, there may be an emerging trend. You ask, “How will this issue be resolved in the future and impact the future of this field?” I doubt it will be resolved. My guess is that fuzzy and vague language, in one form or another, is here to stay. Right now, one of the extra fuzzy words in stuttering is “fluency.” Other fuzzy words may include “control,” “manage”, “disfluency” etc. As far as the future of the field goes, my feeling is that we do our jobs as well as we can, we listen as well as we can, we share what we know as well as we can, and hopefully we have an impact.
