Thanks for an interesting read Peter. I'm an SLT and I'm just embarking on a Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. One of the key aspects I've learnt so far about this approach (I've only had 2 days of teaching so far) is that CBT practitioners don't much like the use of diagnostic words and are all about describing the behaviours, cognitions and autonomic responses that make up the problem that the client seeks help for. I think we have a lot to learn from out psychotherapy and counselling colleagues as far as this goes. I'd also like to share some of the best advice I've had on a professional course. I went to a course at the Michael Palin Centre in London. Their work is very much infuleced by CBT and solution focussed approaces. The course tutor Willie Botteril really drove home the idea of asking 'what else?' and I've foung this so helpful in drilling down to a better definition of what my clients mean. 'I'd like to be more fluenct', 'OK, more fluent, what else?', 'And more confident' 'what will be different when your more confident?' 'I'll feel better' 'What else?' 'I'll answer the teacher when she asks.' etc etc... Those two words have been so helpful in getting more information from clients and I thinkn they fit in with your 'Fluency Challenge'. P.S. Thanks for '50 great ideas' we have it in out team and it's really helpful :)
