Laura, thanks so much for writing. You ask, “have you ever been in a situation where someone (a client, parent, or even fellow SLP) has not reacted well or has been resistant to the Fluency Challenge? If so, how have you responded?” The short answer is “yes.” Using specific language can be challenging for some. When a client discusses "fluency," and the professional asks them to describe more specifically what they mean, this could be difficult for some. Fuzzy and vague terms such as “fluency” are used for a reason. At some level, the term “fluency” is used by a wide range of people because it protects and insulates them from delving deeper into the issues. In my opinion, a good speech-language pathologist thinks carefully about when and how hard to challenge and when to back off. It is not exact, but we do our best.
