Patricia, your article is an excellent review and I hope, as you said, that it encourages more dialogue and information concerning this area. I have a question for you that relates to what you wrote but in an indirect manner. I live in South Central Texas where we have a large population of Spanish speaking individuals. In addition, I have had individuals from various cultural backgrounds and countries on my caseload over the years. The issues of bilingualism or multicultural concerns have never been raised by one single client in all my years of clinical work. For the past four years I worked in a school district where I had all the children who stuttered on my caseload and the vast majority of them were Hispanic. Again, not one parent seemed concerned about language or culture. The parents and children were concerned about stuttering and what could be done about it. Consequently, I have never addressed these issues in my work; there was no need to. My question for you is this: How important do you believe bilingualism and multicultural issues are in the management of stuttering? Thank you.
