Dr. Roberts, I appreciated your presentation on “Myths and Mysteries of Bilingual Stuttering,” and am writing because I’m curious to hear your thoughts on an issue that was not addressed in your presentation: positive effects of bilingualism on stuttering. I am a first-year graduate student in Speech-Language Pathology and am still fairly “green” when it comes to linguistics, ESL, and speech pathology. I’ve recently been exposed to the supposition that there are positive effects of bilingualism on elementary education and pediatric neural functioning (Jarmel, M, & Schneider, J (2010) Speaking in Tongues. Retrieved from: http://www.pbs.org/ speaking-in-tongues), which makes me wonder if there might be positive effects of bilingualism on stuttering too. Do you know if there has been any research dedicated to this issue? Do you think the question of a positive impact of bilingualism/multilingualism on stuttering is worth considering? Thank you for your participation in this event, and for being open to questions like mine. Sincerely, Abigail Cary Acary530@uwsp.edu
