There are some studies suggesting that bilingualism has positive cognitive effects but these effects tend to be quite subtle. In some cases, they might be temporary (as children acquire language). We need more studies to see what is real (and has a real world impact) and what is merely an interesting score in a laboratory experiment. Some studies find no positive effect. Readings? You could email me after this conference ends. Books like Handbook of Bilingualism are a good place to start. Bialystok is one researcher in the area of cognitive effects of bilingualism.
