The article I mentioned is so incomplete that it is hard to see what might be going on with the 4 cases. But the point remains: some people think that L1 (their native language) is always the stronger language. The two are not synonyms. Some people speak a language at home as very young children, but as they move out into the world, this 2nd L (L2)becomes the stronger one. This is just one type of language history. there are many other possibilities. Bilingualism is not like eye colour. Our level of ability in each language changes over time - improving/forgetting.
