Your question about the Howell et al. study is an important one ! My short answer is: 1) we can never draw conclusions about something so complex based on just one study. So we need other studies that attempt to replicate this result; 2)read the letter to the editor by Onlsow, Shenker and others asking some questions about the methodology and then Howell's reply; 3)in a quick reply here, it is not possible to go into detail about the strengths and weaknesses I see in the study. I see it as an important study but there are some points where we need more information, and stronger evidence before we even think of telling parents or PWS that bilingualism does or does not influence the risk of stuttering or the odds of recovering with no treatment.
