Mr. Weidig, As I pointed out in the article, disfluencies should be counted for preschool children near the onset of stuttering, as studies have shown that a decrease in the frequency of stuttering-like disfluencies over time is a prognostic indicator of stuttering. With practice, it can no longer than listening to a speech sample twice; once for syllable counts and once for disfluencies. Of course, if the child is very disfluent, that second listen involves re-listening to disfluencies. Jean
