I am a first year graduate student at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. We just began discussing counting stuttering-like disfluencies. I have quickly realized it will not be very easy. We have discussed that there is not always going to be reliability between coders, even when using the same method. Although there are different ways to count stutter-like disfluencies (e.g., counting disfluencies or making perceptual judgments) I feel that I have adopted the philosophy of remaining consistent as an individual. Although we may not match between coders/raters, I feel it is important to develop a personal means of coding/rating stutter-like disfluencies. In addition, I feel it is important to make both judgments (i.e., counting disfluencies and making perceptual judgments).
