For me generalization is an ongoing process and part of the clinical instatement or modification period. Since I work with parents and children who learn to measure changes in severity of stuttering to inform progress, it is not unusual practice for me to ask a CWS or parent to track changes in severity on an out of clinic situation. This does not mean that the only option is 100% fluency. Usually the child chooses the severity rating that they would aim for in their 'out of clinic' activity or situation and during a short conversation in this situation on a daily basis may try to meet this criteria. This might be only a 10% reduction in stuttering in that particular situation, but certainly is progress. Often older children are looking for that level of stuttering severity where few people would notice their stuttering rather than a perfect fluency; a goal more easily met.
