The 'non-verbal' feedback was a signal such as a 'thumbs up' or a 'high-five' given to praise fluency. In some cases this might be used in place of verbal praise when others are around so as not protect the privacy of the child or bring undue attention to the situation. In Tom's case this was not as effective as the feedback given by his mother because the teacher was inconsistent in providing the feedback.
